From the Superintendent

Spring Banquet

Our Spring Banquet with Gene Stallings is rapidly approaching. Please call or e-mail Terry Stubblefield or Mrs. Sullens to reserve your seats.

Please also be aware that although Mrs. Sullens is still serving as our Director of Development and Admissions, she does much of her work from home. You can always reach her via e-mail at tsullens@fcbcs.org.

Chorus to Sing at State Basketball Tournament

Our high school Chorus has been invited to sing the National Anthem at one of the State Championship Basketball Games. They will sing at the 12:00 game on Friday, February 27, at David Lipscomb University. Our chorus has done an outstanding job of representing our school in the community this year, and I am confident they will do well in this performance. Special thanks go to Mrs. Jeanne Hagar for all of her hard work in starting and developing our vocal music program.

Veterans’ Program

Our Veteran’s Program will be this Friday morning at 9:00. All Veterans, family, and friends are welcome to attend. If you know of any Veteran who will attend, please call Terry in the office and let her know. We want to provide a small gift and refreshments for them and need an accurate count of how many we need to plan for. Thank you for your support with the program.

Preparation for College

At Boyd Christian, we want to give our students the best preparation for college that we can. For us, it’s not about just graduating students from high school and getting them into college. We want them to have the best possible chance of being successful once they get to college.

Records of recent graduating classes show us one area where we can improve. The average GPA for our graduating class of 2006 was 3.54. Certainly, this is an outstanding grade point average. However, the same students in their freshman year of college in 2006-07 had an average GPA of only 2.49. Lower GPA s in the freshman year has been a matter of concern for many students in Tennessee in recent years.

Besides wanting our students to be as successful as possible, there is a financial issue involved. The HOPE Scholarship is available to students who earn a GPA of 3.00 in high school and score a 21 on the ACT. However, students must maintain their GPA once they get to college in order to keep the scholarship. To maintain the scholarship, the Tennessee legislature recently lowered the required college GPA from 3.00 to 2.75. Recent statistics show that about half of all college freshmen lose the scholarship after the first year, and about two-thirds have lost it by the end of their junior year.

We believe that our GPA should be an accurate predictor of how students will perform once they get to college. If our graduates’ GPAs decline, we want to know what we can do to help our graduating seniors to be better prepared.

One such area where we can make improvements is in the area of exams. Currently, we have a policy which allows students to be exempt from semester exams. It is entirely possible for a good student to go through four years of high school at Boyd and never take a semester exam. And we are not the only school in the area that has such a policy. As a teacher, I always wanted as many

students to be exempt as possible, because it meant much less work for me grading exams!

But the question we have to ask ourselves is this: Are we really doing the best job that we can in preparing students for college life when we let them go through high school and not make them take exams? For those students whose GPA dropped from 3.50 in the senior year in high school to 2.50 in their freshman year of college, I wonder how many of them faced semester exams for the first time in that freshman year. I wonder how many of them lost their HOPE scholarship in part because they were unprepared to deal with the rigor of college semester exams.

It is my belief that by allowing students to be exempt from exams, we are not doing the best that we can to prepare students for college. Students can expect a change in this policy beginning with the 2009-2010 school year. While this will likely be unpopular with our students in the short term, we believe that when they get to college, they will be able to face the rigors of college academics with much more confidence. As with any other issue, I would welcome your input in this area.

Summer Reading Program

We at Boyd are always trying to improve our academic program in any way possible. One area that we are looking at is our ACT scores. While our scores have compared very favorably with the area public schools, we still believe we have room for improvement. Under the direction of our guidance counselor, Mrs. Gayle Mayfield, we have begun giving the PLAN test to ninth and tenth graders. This test is designed to predict how those students would do on the ACT test. We are able to take the results from that test and determine what areas we need to strengthen.

One of the most important keys to doing well on tests like the ACT and the SAT is having an extensive command of vocabulary. Simply doing vocabulary exercises is not sufficient to prepare students. The single greatest thing that students can do to improve vocabulary, and subsequently test scores, is to read.

We believe that it is vitally important that students are well read. Aside from having strong vocabulary skills, we want our students to be well rounded and to develop a life-long love of learning.

We are in the process of putting together summer reading lists for our students. This planning is still in the early stages. We are not yet sure what grades the program will extend to. At a minimum, it will be for students in middle school and high school. There will be an expectation that students will read a certain number of books, depending on their grade level, over the course of the summer. Students will have a list of books to select from. Students will be required to read one or two specific books, and then also will be expected to read others of their own choosing from the list. When students begin school in August, teachers will begin class with the expectation that the reading has been completed.

As I mentioned, we are still in the early stages of putting this program together. As with most new programs, we will likely have to make adjustments from time to time. While it may take quite some time before we can measure any impact, we believe that the benefits of this program can be significant. We want you to know that we are always committed to providing the best education we can for your children.

Congratulations go to Coach Chris Sullens for being named Boys Basketball Coach of the Year for District 9, Class A. Coach Sullens was selected by his fellow coaches in the district. From the Superintendent

I want to thank everyone with our P.T.F. organization who worked so hard to organize the pancake breakfast last Saturday. Approximately 150 tickets were sold. Our P.T.F. president, Mrs. Angela Ramsey, along with everyone else involved, are to be commended. I also want to thank everyone who donated food and items for the auction.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to attend an orientation session about the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. The I.B. Diploma is an internationally recognized diploma. It has all the rigor of the Advanced Placement curriculum, but also has additional requirements such as a community service requirement and an extended essay. Unlike most A.P. courses, I.P. courses may be taken at the standard level or at a higher level. Currently, there are only eight high schools in the state of Tennessee that offer the diploma, with Cookeville and Oakland being the closest to McMinnville.

Another area of difference between the I.B. and A.P. is that in the I.B., courses are interrelated. Rather than taking multiple choice exams, which may seem more interested in determining what a student does not know, I.B. exams require lengthy written responses which give students the opportunity to expound on what they actually do know. Students in I.B. classes are, however, prepared for A.P. exams if they choose to take them. There is also much more staff development and supervision required. Teachers’ assignments and grading procedures are evaluated by the I.B. office. No school may offer the I.B. without completing a rigorous, two year authorization process which culminates in an accreditation visit. Unlike the A.P., the I.B. office mandates that I.B. teachers must go through training.

The I.B. Diploma is rapidly gaining in acceptance in American colleges and universities. More and more universities are actively recruiting I.B. students. The Texas state legislature recently

passed legislation requiring Texas state colleges and universities to give at least 24 semester hours of credit to incoming students with the I.B. diploma. And in Florida, state universities not only give advanced standing to students with the I.B., if the student is a Florida resident they are entitled to attend a state university free of charge! Tennessee colleges and universities are also starting to recognize the benefit of the I.B. We are in the process of investigating the feasibility of offering the I.B. here at Boyd.

Another upgrade to our academic program which we are considering for next year is the expansion of our Spanish program. This year we have added twelve weeks of Spanish to each middle school grade. We are considering adding Spanish to our elementary classes next year. In addition, we are looking at the feasibility of offering Spanish III or A.P. Spanish in the high school. While we have not yet made a final decision, we are very optimistic that we will be able to implement these programs next year.

Thank you.

Thank You to LACE

All of the staff of BCS would like to thank LACE for purchasing a new copier for everyone to use. This generous gift will be very beneficial for years to come. Thank you for constant support and hard work for the school. Your years of service are genuinely appreciated.
Parents, Teachers, and Friends,
Wow! What a GREAT day Boyd Christian School had this past Saturday. Great pancakes, sausage, and conversation. It seemed that everyone had a good time. I was very pleased with the amount of people who attended to support Christian Education. We had over 100 people to pre-pay and 59 people who paid at the door! The Sweetheart Auction was also a huge success. I would like to begin by thanking James and Donna Goolsby, Goolsby Sausage, for the sausage along with Billy Foutch, with Billy's Resturant, for the pancake mix. I want to also thank the parents and students who helped during the breakfast; we could not have made this day a success without everyone. A big thank goes to everyone who donated items for the silent auction. I don't feel I can thank everyone enough. The next scheduled PTF meeting will be February 24th at 6:30 PM in the school cafeteria. Please make plans to attend to support Christian Education.
Thank you again,
Angela Ramsey PTF President

Important Weather Announcement

Important announcement about school closings related to weather: Please remember to check TV stations 2, 4, and 17 to know if we close school for bad weather. While it is true that as a general rule, if Warren County closes, we will probably close, this may not always 100% the case. For example, Warren County might close because of cold temperatures only; we would not likely do that. The most reliable source is the television stations. Also, we will post an announcement on the blog.
