News from the Elementary
Kindergarten…Mrs. Hoover
In kindergarten this week, we will continue to study our letters of the alphabet. We will focus on the letter and sound s. We will also continue to make some fall art. We will be working on our books of the Bible up through 2 Kings. Thanks so much to all the parents who helped with Applefest in any way! Thanks also to all of the students who donated books from the book fair to our classroom! I can't wait to share them with the class. Have a great week!
Grade 1…Mrs. Keele
Applefest was wonderful! Thanks to all who helped and came to support our school. We will begin studying about being good citizens in social studies. In math, we are continuing to practice our addition and subtraction facts. We will have a spelling test on Friday. Our reading stories this week are "What Did I See?" and "I Went Walking". Have a great week!
Grade 2…Mrs. Newby
Thanks to all our parents that made Applefest a big success. This week in social studies we will begin studying about our past. Next week, we will have Pioneer days in 2nd grade.
Grade 3…Ms. Farless
This week the third graders will be learning to spell homophones in spelling class. Don't forget to study these words. They can be difficult words to learn. On Tuesday, they will have a test over abbreviations in language class. The rest of the week they will be learning how to write singular and plural nouns. In math we will be subtracting. During science class, they will continue to watch our six caterpillars change. They are currently on their pupa stage of their life cycle. This week in Bible class we will be learning to recite Galatians 6:7. This Bible verse is about sowing and reaping. Finally, in social studies class this week we will be making salt dough landforms. That should be a lot of fun!
Grade 4…Mrs. Vandagriff
Thanks to everyone who came to support Applefest on Saturday. It was a huge success! Please remember our Bake Sale on Friday. We have had a lot of success with our sales, and we appreciate everyone for all of their help. The only tests we will have this week are in Reading and Spelling. We will have a Language test on Monday, October 6th. Have a wonderful week!!
Grade 5…Mr. Burks
Thanks to all the parents who helped make Applefest a success. If you have caps in good shape at home and would like to donate them, we will be giving them as gifts to the men at the nursing homes for Christmas. There will be a social studies test on Chapter 3 Friday.

Yard Signs !!!
Dear Parents:
We now have yard signs to display in your yard supporting your elementary child, middle school child, senior, honor student or Bronco! If you are interested, I will sign you up on a schedule and you will be able to display the sign in your yard in honor of your child or grandchild, niece or nephew, for one week. All we ask is that you make a 20.00 donation to the school. You can also designate to send it to a friends’ yard. (Much like the flamingo project, it will surely draw attention and make your student feel special.) Tell someone that you are proud of them and call the school to have one delivered. We have elementary and middle school signs, a Senior sign and a Bronco sign. These are really nice quality signs. Think about how special your student will feel when he or she arrives home to see that BOYD LOVES THEM! So call the school today and ask when you can display one in your yard. * If you choose to display it all year, we ask that you purchase the sign for 50.00. Thank you for supporting BCS!

Fundraising Update
We have three new fundraising programs which Mrs. Sullens has begun. These programs have the potential to raise several thousand dollars at no cost to our parents. We have already mentioned the Kroger gift cards and the SchoolPop program for ordering online. Another program through the Great Lakes Scrip Center involves the purchase of gift cards good at over 200 retail stores, from grocery stores, to gas stations, restaurants and fast food outlets, and other retail stores. These cards provide the school an opportunity to receive a bonus of anywhere from 2% to 20%, while costing you, the parent, nothing other than your normal purchase at that store. Attached is a partial list of area merchants involved with this program. Mrs. Sullens will be available at Applefest to explain this program to you. The cards make excellent gifts for the holidays, and with a little bit of planning, if you can begin to make most of your own purchases in these areas with gift cards, the school can benefit tremendously. One area private school, with a smaller enrollment than ours, made over $50,000 last year just through the Scrip program!

Optical Computer Mice
We need old optical computer mice to replace the roller ball mice we have. If you or your business have any you are not using - we would certainly love to have some for the school. Please bring them to the main office. We feel certain that we can get enough donated so that we will not have that expense. Thank you for your help!

Go Green With Boyd!
Dear Parents,
School districts and nonprofit organizations across the county have been dealing with huge budget cuts, but we’ve found a way to supplement our finances to get the funds we need.
Boyd Christian School is participating in the FundingFactory® Recycling Program! This fundraiser is FREE and simple because there’s nothing to sell, no paperwork to fill out and no deadline. The program runs year-round, accumulating constant income for our efforts. But we won’t get very far without your support. Please donate your empty printer cartridges and used cell phones to our office and we’ll take it from there! We will recycle the cartridges and cell phones through FundingFactory to earn funds for the school.
Last year alone, more than 300 million cartridges were thrown away, while 30,000,000 cell phones were tossed or replaced. We’re alleviating the volume of waste that goes into landfills, while collecting cash we need to keep our school running smoothly. Your help is vital to our fundraising success. Cell phones and cartridges can be dropped off at the office.
FundingFactory also sponsors a businesses support program, where your employer can help out our school without spending a cent. FREE prepaid shipping labels can be sent, free of charge, directly to any business, organization or other facility within the continental United States. Business supporters simply need to load boxes, apply a FREE prepaid shipping label and leave them for the next UPS pickup. If you work for a company that may be interested in supporting us, please call FundingFactory toll-free at 1.888.883.8237. Give the customer service representative our school identification number, and they’ll set you up to support our account.
This is a great opportunity. Thank you for your support!

From the Superintendent
Please remember that School pictures will be made on Thursday, September 18. Please mark this date on your calendar.
I hope that you are able to read the newsletter on the school website. The newsletter is now available on the school website on Mrs. Sullens’ blog page. If you still would like a printed copy, they will be available in the office. You may have your child pick up a copy if needed.
We have now received our Kroger gift cards. My family has begun using ours, and I hope you have also. I believe that you may load up to $500 at a time on the card, then when you pay at checkout, pay with the card. Boyd Christian then gets 4% of the amount of your total purchase. This is basically free money for the school, as it does not cost you or the school anything.
I hope that you will take a look at the School Pop website (www.schoolpop.com) and register there also. If you do any online shopping, the school can receive cash rebates there also. Many popular online retailers such as Land’s End, L.L. Bean, J.C. Penney, Circuit City, Amazon, and others are on the site. Also, many of these retailers offer discounts through School Pop. For example, I have often used FTD to send flowers to my mother on special occasions, since she lives in another state. If I use FTD again next month for her birthday, I will get a 15% discount through School Pop, and Boyd Christian will get a 7.5% rebate on my total purchase. If you do any online shopping, this can be a tremendous benefit to the school. Many companies offer free shipping. Please take a look at the website and see if any of your favorite retailers are there.
Book Fair Begins September 26
Please remember our Book Fair which will run from September 26 to October 1. Mrs. Shelley Rhoton, our librarian, always does an outstanding job with the fair. Chorus
Mrs. Jeanne Hagar is instructing girls' chorus. If you sneak into the gym around one in the afternoon... you will hear the girls. They are quite angelic. We are thrilled to have added this to our program this year. Thank you Mrs. Hagar for a wonderful contribution! We look forward to seeing the girls perform at many events this school year.
