Parents of 8th Grade students:
The EXPLORE Test Results are being sent home today, Thursday, 12/10/09. Along with their score report, the actual test questions are being sent home so that you can go over any problems your child did not get correct. Their score report tells the answer they chose and what the correct answer was. This is a great tool to help your student learn from the test. Please contact the teacher for an explanation if you do not understand the question your child did not get correct. (Last year teachers were asked to go over the problems that some students got incorrect during classroom time.) The EXPLORE is the practice test that PREPARES STUDENTS FOR THE ACT TEST. The ACT Test (along with the student's grade point average) determines whether or not students receive the LOTTERY SCHOLARSHIP. They need a score of 21 or a 3.0 grade point average. They will take another practice test, the PLAN Test, in 10th Grade. Then they will start taking the ACT Test and can take it more than once to try to improve their score. Gayle Mayfield

PTF MEETING
Parents/BCS Supporters,
Our next PTF meeting will be Monday, 11/30/09, at 6:30 in the BCS
cafeteria. Hopefully the chocolate sale will get under way very soon. We
are hoping it will be delivered, so we can get it to the students toward the
end of this next week. The students will have 3 weeks to sell the candy, so
the money needs to be returned to your child's homeroom teacher no later
than December 11th. Just a reminder; any unsold candy cannot be returned to
the school. Thank you for your support of Christian Education and Boyd
Christian School.

I want to thank James and Donna Goolsby and Holly Hodges from Goolsby Sausage for donating a new water fountain to the school gymnasium and repairing the water fountain in the main building. This has filled a tremendous need, and we are so thankful for their generosity. In addition, they have already been providing many of the office supplies we use here at school. Thank you so much, Mr. and Mrs. Goolsby and Mrs. Hodges!
Our PTF is about to begin their annual candy sale. Your child should be bringing home a permission slip today. Please sign the permission slip and return it to your child’s teacher, indicating whether or not your child has your permission to participate in this fundraising activity.
I am meeting with a prospective music teacher next Monday about the possibility of beginning an instrumental music program and a band. If your child is interested in learning to play an instrument, or if your child has already had lessons, please pass that information along to Terry Stubblefield in the office.
Please remember that school pictures are due back on November 13.
The 7th and 8th grade boys basketball team came in 2nd in the Morrison Ruritan Tournament last week. Congratulations to Christian Barrett, Nick Tilton, and Colin Stubblefield for being named to the All-Tournament Team.
Please note that parent-teacher conferences will be on Thursday, November 19, from 3:00 to 6:00. Please contact the office to schedule any conferences.

All students in 8th and 10th grades will be tested. These tests are versions of the ACT Test (college entrance), which is used to determine if a student qualifies for the Lottery Scholarship. If students achieve a score of 21 on the ACT, they receive the Lottery Scholarship. The EXPLORE and the PLAN help them to prepare for taking the ACT Test and scoring well on it. More information will be sent home with students about these tests.Seniors will be taking a tour of Tennessee Tech. University on November 11th. Permission notes will be sent home to be signed.

Yesterday our teachers had the opportunity to attend the annual Christian Schools Inservice Day, which was held at Columbia Academy. The theme of this year’s event was “Integrating Faith and Learning”. The keynote address was by Bruce McLarty, the Vice-president for Spiritual Life from Harding University. His presentation, “How to Teach Christianly in a Christian School”, was outstanding.
Recently our teachers began recognizing a “Student of the Month” in the middle and high schools. The purpose of this award is to recognize two outstanding students who exemplify the qualities that we want our students to have. It may or may not be a student with the greatest academic achievement. It could be a student who has shown significant improvement, or who has distinguished themselves in the area of service. I am pleased to announce that the Students of the Month for October are Kaleb Tilton and Mikayla Carroll.
We have been in touch with an instrumental music instructor about the possibility of beginning a small band here at Boyd. If your child is interested in learning to play an instrument, or if your child has already had lessons, please pass that information along to Terry Stubblefield in the office.

Welcome Back Newsletter
From the Superintendent
I want to thank all of our students who brought guests with them for Bring A Friend To School Day. We had a total of 60 guest students, up from 44 the year before. We are excited that one of those guests enrolled today! We hope that more of our guests will join us here at Boyd as students.
Special thanks also go to the BBB Booster Club for putting on the bonfire the night before. It was well attended and was a big success.
This Friday, October 23, beginning at 4:00, the ladies of LACE will once again have the annual Applefest program. There will be lots of fun, games, food, and basket auctions. The members of LACE always put in so much hard work to make Applefest a success, and they raise important funds for the school.
Please remember that Monday, November 2 is our annual Christian Schools Inservice Day. This will be held at Columbia Academy. School will be closed on that day.
Congratulations go to our 5th and 6th grade basketball teams for their performances in the pre-season tournament at Warren County High School before fall break. The boys came in 3rd place and the girls finished in 5th place. Alex Hobbs, Blathen Woodlee, and Dylan Tubb were named to the all-tournament team.

From the Superintendent
This week we have some very important events here at Boyd. To begin with, our 5th and 6th grade basketball teams play in the 3 Point Club tournament at Warren County High School beginning today. Play will continue throughout the week. Our schedule will depend upon our results tonight.
Then, this Thursday evening, the BBB Boster Club will host a bonfire here at school beginning at 6:30. This is another great opportunity to get prospective students on our campus. We hope that all of our students will plan to come to the bonfire and bring a guest. BBB began this event last year prior to Bring A Friend To School Day, and it was such a success that they decided to make it an annual tradition.
Please remember Bring a Friend to School Day on Friday, October 9. We are asking all students in grades K-11 to talk to their friends who might be interested in attending Boyd. Registration forms are going home today. These must be signed and returned by the parents/guardian of the guest student. We would like for each student who is able to bring one friend to school with them on that day. Last year’s Bring a Friend Day was a huge success, with 44 guest students in attendance. We would like to have more guests this year.
Also on Friday, beginning at 4:00, the ladies of LACE will once again have the annual Applefest program. There will be lots of fun, games, food, and basket auctions. The members of LACE always put in so much hard work to make Applefest a success, and they raise important funds for the school.
We had $2,258 worth of sales in our recent Book Fair. Our librarian, Mrs. Shelly Rhoton, always does an outstanding job not just with the book fair, but with the entire operation of the library and the Accelerated Reader program. The Book Fair helps to provide needed resources for our library. I want to thank all of you who supported the fair and helped to make it successful.
Last week we completed our Name the Mascot contest. The name which was selected was “Bucky the Blazing Bronco”. Thanks to all the students who participated, and a big thanks to Coach Gary Jackson for spearheading this project. Enthusiasm and school spirit is high, and we want to see that continue to grow.
The total net income from the fair food booth was $6,505.15. Once again, I want to thank each and every one of you who helped to make this project a success.

We almost have the revenue totals from the fair food booth. We still are expecting another invoice or two. When we have all of the totals, we will make that public.
Our website and e-mail service is down today. We do not yet know when it will be restored. We appreciate your patience as we work through this.
The “Name the Mascot” contest continues this week. As you know, the school mascot is the Broncos, and we are in the process of improving our costume and having a student mascot at ball games. Students have submitted suggestions for a name for the mascot and are voting this week.
Our visiting team from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools will visit Boyd on April 29-30, 2010. The team will be chaired by Dr. Monte Tatom from Freed Hardeman University. We have completed our school improvement plan and will soon post it to the school website.

A great big thank you to EVERYONE who worked the booth. Thank youalso to everyone who brought pies, chili, brownies or beans. I was humbledby the response of all the loving cooks we have at this school. On apersonal note, I got to know so many of you this last two weeks. I feel blessed to know so many wonderful people who support our wonderful school.Thank you so much for all your support of the booth, if all you could do waspatron it. I am honored to have been able to work with and for you. Also, if you left a dish with us, they are in the cafeteria.

I again want to express my appreciation to everyone who donated time to work at the fair food booth, and also to those of you who made things to sell. A special thank you goes to Dachelle McVey for supervising the food booth. Dachelle and her family put in so many hours this week to make sure that our food booth was successful. Dachelle did an outstanding job, and we could not have been so successful without her. Thank you, Dachelle!
We were well represented by Boyd students at this year’s fair. Megan Boren, a senior, was named first runner-up in the “Fairest of the Fair” contest. Lauren Wilcher, another senior, and Monica Hillis, graduate of 2008, also were among the top ten finalists. Natalie Knox won a red ribbon in the art contest. Please let us know of any other students who won awards.
For all of our athletes in all grades, Dr. Jeff McVey, along with Mrs. Libby Kuykendall, have generously offered to provide sports physicals free of charge. These will be performed at Dr. McVey’s office beginning September 25. Please call Dr. McVey’s office at 815-5437 to schedule an appointment. Appointment times will begin at 3:15 in the afternoon and continue until 6:00 or 6:30. These are free of charge, and no insurance claims will be generated. This is a tremendous service to our students, and we appreciate Dr. McVey and Mrs. Kuykendall for making this service available to our families.
I have been informed by Coach Jackson that the local Walmart will begin selling Boyd gear in early October. It’s good to have a little more recognition in the community.

I want to thank all of our parents, staff, students, and school board members who have done so much to help with our food booth at the fair. Special thanks go to Mrs. Dachelle McVey for all of her hard work in organizing the booth. It is an incredibly difficult and time consuming task to find and organize volunteers, order food and supplies, account for the money, etc. Mrs. McVey has done an outstanding job. We still need volunteers to work this week, so please contact Mrs. McVey if you are able to assist. You may get a message to her through us here at school.
I also want to thank Mr. Steve Hillis and Mrs. Sonia Vandagriff for their efforts in organizing our booth under the grandstand. Thanks to some donors, we have been able to give away free Bibles with the school’s name inside to anyone who wants a copy. We also have been showing the video of the Gene Stallings speech, as well as a promotional video about the school which was filmed by Mr. Shelby Kohring, the youth minister at the Westwood Church of Christ. This video was very professionally done, and we are indebted to Shelby for his efforts with this.
Last week, Mr. Greg Vinson and I attended a luncheon at Lipscomb University for business managers and administrators from area Christian schools. In attendance were representatives from Middle Tennessee Christian, Ezell-Harding, Nashville Christian, Friendship Christian, and the Lipscomb Campus School. All of the schools represented reported a decline in enrollment, with a couple of schools dropping by as many as 60 and 70 students. Only Boyd Christian reported an increase in
enrollment. I felt very fortunate that in tough economic times, God continues to bless us.
Some of you have been helpful in providing names and contact information for home schooled students in the area. We are putting together a database of home school families here in Warren County that we can contact about providing some of these services. This could be an excellent source of revenue for the school; we could even gain some new full time students. If you know of a family that home schools their children, please pass along their name and phone number to us here in the office.

We still need volunteers to work in the fair food booth. As you know, the Fair will be held September 11-19. Many parents have volunteered, but we still need more. We need all parents to help us in any way possible. Please contact Mrs. Dachelle McVey if you are able to help. This is one of our biggest fundraising projects of the year. Your help is appreciated by all of us.
As many of you know, President Obama will speak to the nation’s school children today on the topic of their personal responsibility for their education. Yesterday, the White House posted the text of President Obama’s speech on its website. You can read the entire speech here: http://www.whitehouse.gov/MediaResources/PreparedSchoolRemarks/. I have read the text of the speech, and I believe the message is very worthwhile for children to hear. Given that the topic is personal responsibility, it seems an especially appropriate message for parents to share with their children to help reinforce the issue of responsibility both at school and in the home. The tape of the speech will likely be available on the internet and on television this week. I suggest that all parents read the text of the speech and decide for themselves if they want to share it with their children. I will have copies of the text available here at school in case any of you would like a copy.
As I mentioned last week, we are looking for ways that we can provide services to home schooled students here in Warren County. We are putting together a database of home school families here in Warren County that we can contact about providing some of these services.

We will have an important meeting for all parents and girls who want to play 7th-8th grade basketball this Friday afternoon at 5:00 in the school cafeteria. We do not have enough of our own students to form a team, and since it is not a high school team, it is acceptable to allow girls who are not students here at Boyd to play. If your daughter is interested in playing, please plan to be at the meeting. Also, if you are aware of any home schooled girls who may be interested, please mention it to their parents.

If you know of a family that home schools their children, please pass along their name and phone number to us here in the office.
Westwood Bridge to Close Monday, September 14
Please remember that the Westwood Bridge will close Monday, September 14. If this affects your route to school in the mornings, please be thinking about your alternate route so that your children will still be here on time next Monday.
Upcoming Sports Events

9/14...Golf vs. Van Buren Co.

All home golf matches are played at the Reserve at Collins River. We now have girls golf for the first time. If you have a daughter in grades 8-12 who is interested in playing golf, please encourage her to join the team. It is not too late.
7th-8th Grade Girls’ Basketball Meeting
We will have an important meeting for all parents and girls who want to play 7th-8th grade basketball this Friday afternoon at 5:00 in the school cafeteria. We do not have enough of our own students to form a team, and since it is not a high school team, it is acceptable to allow girls who are not students here at Boyd to play. If your daughter is interested in playing, please plan to be at the meeting. Also, if you are aware of any home schooled girls who may be interested, please mention it to their parents.

We have had a successful opening to school, and the students seem to be happy to be back. I want to thank all of you who have volunteered time and effort to help us get the school year started.
The School Board would like to invite all parents to a Back to School meeting this Thursday at 6:30 PM in the school cafeteria. This is a good opportunity to meet the individuals who serve on our School Board.
As many of you know, we are making preparations to operate our fair food booth. The fair is opens September 11 and closes September 19. We need as many volunteers as we can get. This is one of our biggest and most important fundraisers of the year. If you can help, please contact Mrs. Dachelle McVey.
Our new lunch program seems to working smoothly. The menu will be posted on the school website. Originally, we thought that we would be able to allow students to order food in advance. However, in order to do this, we would have to take student orders two weeks in advance. This probably would be unworkable. However, if your child has some favorite items, we can order m ore of those to make sure that we have sufficient quantity. So far, we are accomplishing our goal of providing healthy lunches in a manner that is cost effective to the school. Early comments by the students are positive. If you would like to send us your comments, please feel free to e-mail me or Mrs. Dietra Dunlap.

Dear Parents,
As many of you know, Boyd Christian School operates a food booth every year at the Warren County Fair. This is a critical fundraiser for the school. This year’s fair will be September 11-19.
The fair food booth is a school-sponsored fundraiser. The purpose of the fundraiser is to raise money for operating expenses. Mrs. Dietra Dunlap, our new cafeteria supervisor, is in charge of the event. Many of you have already agreed to volunteer your time to work at the booth, and for that we are very grateful. If you would be willing to assist us in this important project, please contact Mrs. Dunlap at 668-3850. You may also email her at ddunlap@fcbcs.org.
Once again, thanks to all of our parents for all that you do for us.
Sincerely,

The following agenda for the 11th is as follows: in the high school building carpet removed in 2 classrooms, a wall being moved in another classroom, and painting of classrooms. Please bring any tools to use with this work. Please bring outside yard tools for the work day on the 25th. We will work on cleaning the school campus for Open House. Tree limbs may need to be cut, painting of outside bleachers, clean up inside, pressure washing, etc. Thank you for your continued support of Christian Education; please make plans to attend one or both of the work days.
Thank you,

Save Foodland Receipts!!!
In Sunday's Southern Standard, Foodland has an ad stating that they will give 1% back to schools. All shoppers have to do is write the school's name on the receipt and drop it in a collection box or turn it in to the school in the fall. Thank you.

Dear Parents, Teachers, and Friends:
Last week, Mr. Ben Nixon announced his resignation from the Board of Directors of Boyd Christian School. Mr. Nixon has served the Board for eighteen years, including the last four as Chairman. As Vice-chairman, I will assume the duties of Chairman until our annual election of officers in July.
Mr. Nixon’s leadership on the board has been invaluable. He has helped to lead the school through challenging times. During Mr. Nixon’s tenure on the Board we added our high school. In addition to countless hours of service at Board meetings and other functions, Mr. Nixon has tirelessly volunteered his time and money to take care of maintenance and repairs at the school. I hope that all of you will join us in expressing appreciation to Mr. Nixon for his years of faithful service to the students of Boyd Christian School.
In Christ,
Brett Merritt

A big thank you goes to our BBB Athletic Booster Club for hosting the high school Athletic Awards Banquet last Saturday night. Club president Steve Tilton and the rest of the officers and members put in many hours to help support our athletic program. Thank you to all of you who came and supported their spaghetti supper. Without the efforts of parent volunteers, we would not be able to have extra-curricular programs like this.
Some of you have been eating at Pizza Hut on Wednesday evenings so that the school can get a 20% rebate from Pizza Hut on your bill. Now, we are able to get an additional rebate. We now have $10 Pizza Hut gift cards on sale in the school office. If you will come by the office sometime before you go to Pizza Hut on Wednesday nights and get a gift card to pay with, the school gets an extra 8%. We appreciate your efforts to support the school with these programs.
Please remember that will reinstate the bus route to Cannon and Coffee Counties for next year. More details about the cost will be provided in the near future.
Lunch Menu for May 19-25

Scholarships Available for Pre-Kinder
We have recently learned that we have up to three scholarships available for pre-kinder students through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. These are federal dollars which are available and are based on financial need. If you have a child who you would like to enroll in pre-kinder for next year, or if you have friends or relatives who might be interested and may be able to take advantage of this opportunity, please contact the school office.
Please remember to tell your relatives and friends about the addition of our 3 year old pre-kinder class. We still have space available. Interested families should register their children right away. Some parents have inquired about the possibility of 3 year olds attending part time. This may be a possibility, but we need to make sure that parents who want to enroll their child full time have the opportunity to do so. Also, in order to offer the program, we have to have a minimum of seven full time students, or the equivalent.
Upcoming Dates

May 26...8th Grade Graduation

BCS Supporters,
PTF wants to "Thank you" for coming through once again for us with flying colors! This past Friday was Teacher/Faculty Appreciation Day; it was WONDERFUL. The faculty could not believe all of the food that was provided along with the GREAT door prizes. It was nice to see their smiling faces which YOU helped make possible. Whether you cooked food, sent money, brought drinks, etc. this special day was made possible because YOU wanted to do something special for our teachers and faculty. I have been given a lot of "thank yous" and "you don't know how much this means to us" since Friday; they are very appreciative of what you did for them. We held our last PTF meeting for the year on April 30th. We have scheduled another work day for July 25th from 8-12:00 PM; this is on a Saturday. Please mark your calendar now to help clean the BCS campus for Open House. Bring any yard equipment that you can for that day such as power washers, items to trim trees/limbs, clothes to paint in, etc. If you have questions, you may e-mail me at aramsey@fcbcs.org I was told today that all of the Mother's Day Baskets have been bought except for one-$12 item. If you would like to purchase the last one, contact Terry Stubblefield or Sonia Vandagriff. At this time, plan on the next PTF meeting being sometime in August after school gets started. We will have a lot to plan; especially getting our booth ready for the Warren County A & L Fair. PTF wants to thank you for all that you have done this past school year to help BCS and Christian Education. We couldn't do it without YOU! Thanks again and have a GREAT and SAFE summer.

Please remember to tell your relatives and friends about the addition of our 3 year old pre-kinder class.

Grandparent's Day Program and Lunch
Friday May 1 Grandparents Day will begin at 10:00 AM.
Please turn in your lunch reservations and money by Thursday as food will only be provided for those who send in their reservation. Thank you.
PreKinder Classes
Mr. Harper has announced there will be a pre-kinder class in the fall taught by Renee Burch. Kristi Bost is currently considering taking the 4 year old class. As you may already know, both teachers are phenomenal. If you know of anyone with children 3 or 4, please do spread the word and let them know that they are more than welcome at Boyd! Please feel free to contact us with any questions. The pre-kinder day lasts the same duration as the regular school day. Tuition is also the same. Thank you.

Please remember the Open House for new and prospective families On Monday, May 4, at 7:00. If you have friends who are considering Boyd for next year, please invite them to attend. You are also welcome to accompany your guests. Please remember the referral bonus you can receive for families that you refer to Boyd.
In our last newsletter, I indicated that the Board had approved a $10 per month tuition increase. I was in error on this topic; the $10 was only a proposal that is under consideration and was not approved in the April 16 meeting.
Please remember to pre-register for 2009-10 as soon as possible.
I want to thank Jeanne Hagar and our Chorus for the wonderful presentation last Thursday evening. Thanks again to all of you who came out to support this event.
Please remember to tell your relatives and friends about the addition of our 3 year old pre-kinder class. Interested families should register their children right away.

BCS Supporters, PTF wants to thank everyone who helped clean up the BCS campus last Saturday. I didn't count, but we probably had 30-40 people during the day. We especially want to thank BETA, Interact, and NHS; it was nice of the students to get out of bed on a Saturday to help around campus. There was gravel added to both parking lots, mulch put on the playground, new swings put up, the "big" tree moved and hauled off, etc. A BIG THANK YOU goes to Mary's Greenhouse for donating plants and soil at the front going into the main building; the flowers look wonderful! Don't forget to view the assortment of baskets you can purchase for Mother's Day. Several people have worked together to help put together this PTF fundraiser. Samples will be on a table in the hallway to view. Parents are being contacted to bring items for the Teacher Appreciation Day scheduled for May 8th. You may e-mail me at aramsey@fcbcs.org if you haven't been contacted and would like to do something. Anyone who wants to help that day can be at the school anytime between 8:00 and 3:00 PM. I know the teachers/staff are looking forward to this day, so lets try to make it a GREAT day for them. The PTF Officers want to thank Goolsby Sausage for the fundraiser. They gave the money for the top 3 sellers and also gave us ALL the money that was paid for the sausage. If you see James, Donna, Holly, or Mandy, please tell them THANK YOU. Please make plans to attend the next PTF meeting scheduled for Thursday, 04/30/09, at 6:30 PM in the cafeteria. Thank you for supporting BCS and Christian Education!! You are GREATLY appreciated. I want to thank all of you who participated in our Campus Clean-up day last Saturday. So many people worked so hard to clean up the campus, remove the brush pile and dead tree, improve the pre-kinder playground and our parking lot. Thank you again for all that you do for Boyd Christian.
At the School Board meeting last week, the Board approved the addition of a 3 year old pre-kinder class, contingent upon having seven students enroll. If you have a child who will be three years old, or if you know of another family that might be interested, please contact us as soon as possible. We need to know as soon as possible if we will have enough students to have this class.
The Board also approved a tuition increase of only $10 per month, or $110 per year, per student. Our Board is committed to keeping tuition as affordable as possible.
Please remember our Chorus concert this Thursday, April 23. Mrs. Jeanne Hagar and the chorus are working hard to prepare, and I’m certain that it will be quite a show! Tickets are $4.00 and may be purchased at the door.
Please remember the Open House for new and prospective families on Monday, May 4, at 7:00. If you have friends who are considering Boyd for next year, please invite them to attend. Please remember to return the pre-registration forms for 2009-10 as soon as possible. If you need another copy of the registration form, you can print it off the blog, or you can call Terry Stubblefield in the office and ask her to send another one home
